Article summary

When attempting to merge a letter in Microsoft Word, the error 'word could not open app because it didn't contain a valid database.' occurs.

Answer:

This error occurs if you do not have the merge template linked to the correct data source that was exported out of FIMS.

To resolve:

1. Go to the export in question, for example fund statement export, gift acknowledgement export, application export

2. In the export in FIMS, verify where the data file is being exported to.

In this example below for a grant letter export in FIMS on Azure, we see that the app.txt file is being exported to the local C drive to, FIMS Exports\Files.

Note that other export such as gift letters and fund statements will have different file names and your folders on your local C drive will be named differently.

Example for an on-premises environment:

2.  After exporting data from FIMS, open the Word merge template. You will see the screen below open. Click NO.

Note that the drive and folder names in the path will be different in your document, this is just an example.

Here, be sure to read carefully the path and file that is listed here and verify that it is the correct path and file for the merge document you are working with. Most likely, if you are getting an error, the data source is not correct, so be sure to click NO here.

Click NO here:

3. Once the Word template opens, Go to Mailings\Use an Existing List\Select recipients and navigate to and select the txt file that was exported from FIMS that needs to be used for your template.

4. Click File\Save on your template
