FieldMaker Data Grid

This Data Grid provides a list of FieldMaker files you have created, sorted by File Name. Use this list to select an existing file to work with.

FieldMaker Data Grid

File Tab

The File tab contains information about each file configuration record in FieldMaker. Use this tab to create new FieldMaker database files.

File Tab Fields

Field

Description

FIMS File

The name of the parent FIMS table that you want to create new fields for.

The new fields are maintained in FieldMaker and linked to the parent FIMS table.

NOTE: You can only create one FieldMaker table for each parent table.

Index

Read only field that is automatically added to the new FieldMaker table to link it to the FIMS table.

FieldMaker File

The file name for the FieldMaker table. The default value is <fm_xxxx> where xxxx is the name of the parent FIMS table (for example, fm_donor for additions to the donor table).

IMPORTANT: Do not use spaces in the file name.

Label

The label that is used to identify the file in messages.

NOTE: It is generally a good idea to give the label the same name as the parent FIMS table. Please note as well that delimiters and special characters like commas and hyphens should not be used in field labels.

Description

A text field you can use to hold comments about the origin and purpose of the FieldMaker file.

Field Tab

The Field tab contains a list of the field configuration records you have created for the selected FieldMaker table. Once you create fields, they are available for placement on the Layout tab (which sets up the way fields will appear on the actual screen).

Field

Description

Field Name

The name that identifies the new field in the database.

IMPORTANT: Do not use spaces in the file name. Please note as well that delimiters and special characters like commas and hyphens should not be used in field names.

Data Type

The type of field that you want to create: character, date, decimal, integer, or logical.

Dec

The number of decimal places included in the field.

This value will always be 0 for any non-decimal field. The default value for decimal fields is 2.

Case

Indicates whether the field is case-sensitive (yes or no).

This value will always be no for non-character fields.

Label

The screen label name for the field. You can use spaces in this name, since it is not directly linked to the database.

View As

The way the field will be presented on the screen (for example, combo-box, editor, fill-in, toggle-box).

Screen Tab

The Screen tab allows you to configure one or more FieldMaker Viewers (also known as Plus Pages, because they have a plus-sign on the tab label in FIMS modules) for the selected FieldMaker file.

It also allows you to link the viewer to additional files (for example, if you are creating a file for the applications table in FIMS, you can link the same viewer to applications, application history, and grants) or create a custom viewer.

A text description of the configuration record.

Viewer

The name of the custom viewer being used (if any).

NOTE: Contact FIMS Support for more information using custom viewers.

The Layout tab provides a visual interface to help you choose and position the fields that you want to include on the FieldMaker tab (Plus Page) in the FIMS interface.

Example: Layout Tab

Processes Tab (FieldMaker)

The Processes tab allows you to commit FieldMaker changes to the FIMS database. Committing changes implements the FieldMaker configuration – any changes you have made will not appear in FIMS until you run the commitment process.

Refer to Committing FieldMaker Changes for more information.
