How to Link a Promise to a Gift

When you enter a new gift in the gift module, there is no way to link that payment to a promise the way there is to a pledge. Promises were not designed to function in the same way that pledges do.  A gift can link to a pledge whereas a gift cannot link to a promise. There is no direct connect between a promise and a gift because promises are non-binding and not something that is tracked as a receivable whereas a pledge is something that needs to be tracked as a receivable on the books.

In order to link a promise to gift, enter in the Promise ID# in the gift comments and then in the comments of the promise you could add the gift # indicating that the promise has been made. You would need to manually edit the promise with any changes.
